This course includes self-paced online learning modules that participants are expected to complete before instruction; two 2-hour Zoom sessions; and two full days in the field. It covers:
How to plan for travel in avalanche terrain
How to identify avalanche terrain
How to make terrain choices as a group, using the AIARE Risk Management Framework
The basics of companion rescue
Itinerary:
Tuesday and Thursday prior to your field days: A virtual classroom (Zoom) session will take place in the evening prior to your weekend field days, from 6pm to 8pm. It will expand on the pre-course materials and include breakout sessions with plenty of opportunity for interaction.
Saturday-Sunday: Field days run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Snoqualmie Pass. Meeting location will be communicated during your virtual classroom session. We’ll practice: implementing the repeatable risk management process laid forth in your classroom and online learning; recognizing avalanche terrain; exploring the snowpack; managing and communicating within a group; and learning the fundamentals of companion rescue.
Difficulty:
This is an entry-level course. You should know how to use your gear and move downhill in blue terrain in difficult conditions.
